Hey I just got started on Ubuntu and frankly I am not satisfied with just making it. I would like to know every part of this great OS. Are there any books that you would suggest me to read?

If you wish too purchase a book I've found the Ubuntu/Linux Bible contains a significant amount of information.

Or you can download and read the Ubuntu Pocket Guide (free in PDF format) which also helps new users to understand the OS.

Download site for the pocket guide: http://www.ubuntupocketguide.com/download_main.html

Good Luck and I Hope this helps.

Linux for Dummies, is a good overview also the Ubuntu Guide - Ubuntu 9.04 (Jaunty Jackalope) is great. You can find it at http://ubuntuguide.org/wiki/Ubuntu:Jaunty

I recommend this book, How Linux Works (http://www.amazon.com/How-Linux-Works-Brian-Ward/dp/1593270356/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1248671732&sr=1-1)

It's not boring techno-babble.

Everything you need to know is at The Linux Documentation Project:

Run it in Vbox off 6.3 livecd w/6.4 stable book, packages, and patches mounted on a separate .vdi within the environment.

Snapshot the VM every chapter before starting.

I'm still working through my first full deployment... It answers all.

Edit: Use the 6.3 livecd because it is a 'cleaner' build environment than Ubuntu - but you want to be reading the 6.4 manual and using the 6.4 packages/patches. And remember you are only doing it to learn - don't sweat patching policies and stuff - treat it like a lab experiment.

If you find you messed up - just throw it out and roll back to an earlier state... as long as you really want to know everything ;)
