I installed my printer with the recommended printer MFC 5440. I tried a few other printers but none work. There seems to be commpunication with the printer because a window pops up and says printing and then job completed but there is no output from the printer.
I am using the 64 bit ed of 9.04

See the Brother Linux Website (http://solutions.brother.com/linux/en_us/index.html) to obtain the correct drivers for your printer, and also the installation instructions. You have to install both the LPR and cupswrapper drivers.

Also see this link (http://www.openprinting.org/show_printer.cgi?recnum=Brother-MFC-5490CN) for what the Open printing Database says about your printer.

Good Luck

I have tried this route. When I attempt to install the LPR package in terminal as per Brother's instructions I get this message:
dpkg: unknown force/refuse option `architecturemfc5490cnlpr-1.1.2-2.i386.deb'

I believe I also followed the instructions at Brothers site for 64 bit installations

I had a warning on start up saying there was an incompatibility with my BIOS. Never happened before this Ubuntu install, So I am bailing on Ubuntu; I have uninstalled it. Too complex and problematic for me
