Hi all. Obviously there is a system76 section to this forum so I know about them, but I was wondering who else sold computers with ubuntu pre-installed. I imagine it would be a great way to save money, plus I wouldn't have to worry about hardware compatibilty. I know HP has Suse, but I like ubuntu. Any suggestions?

I would recommend system76 myself.

Great customer service and rugged hardware.

You are supporting the community when you buy from System76.

Yes - I am a customer. I grew hair in all the right places and all the women love me now.

It really depends on what country you live in.

In the US, there's System76, ZaReason, Dell, Linux Certified, among others.

And, no, it isn't about saving money, usually, since Windows and Microsoft benefit from economies of scale.

It's about voting with your wallet and making a difference.

it really wouldn't save any money? vista costs so much if you buy separately. since ubuntu is free i would have thought there would be at least some difference. btw, i'm not actually in the market for a new laptop, im just a little curious.

Well, in the case of System76 and ZaReason, they just cannot buy in the kind of bulk that larger OEMs like Dell and HP can, so their profit margins are even slimmer on the hardware. Even though they do not have to buy Windows, they cannot sell their computers for as cheap as the big companies do.

For Dell and HP, theoretically the Linux models are cheaper than the corresponding Windows models, but the Windows models often get promotional discounts (probably subsidized by Microsoft) that Dell and HP "forget" to apply to the Linux models until the Linux community reminds them to apply the discounts equally.

I lucked out because I happened to get my HP Mini with Ubuntu at a time when it was cheaper than the corresponding Windows model.

The "laptop" on the left is a netbook, and the Windows XP model with the same specs costs exactly the same.

Maybe folks can vote up this IdeaStorm idea:
Implement a system by which Ubuntu systems automatically get promotional discounts their Windows counterparts get (http://www.ideastorm.com/ideaView?id=087700000000C1DAAU)
