When I boot up the Ubuntu Server CD (x86), I get to the first menu fine. If I check the CD, it checks fine with no display anomalies. But when I try to install Ubuntu Server, all I can see are vertical lines on the screen where the text should be. If I keep hitting Enter, the installer appears to progress, but I can't see what I'm doing.

I have never used the server version but here are two suggestions:

Boot options (https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BootOptions)
Scroll down to the section dealing with F4. You want to try safe grahics mode

if that doesn't work try the alternate text based installer (http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/downloadmirrors#alternate)

No safe graphics mode is listed. I'll try the alternate text installer. Strange problem though. Thanks!
