I have a virus riddled xp system that I am trying to fix. This virus won't let me log into xp at all. It brings me up to the log in page and then kicks me out when I press my user name. So I got the idea of installing ubuntu to help fix the system. However, I have created three Ubuntu live discs and none of them load. I just get Installing, please wait ... for about 2 hours. The cap and scroll lock lights blink and I believe the dvd drive disengages. Can anyone help me with this? I really want to install Ubuntu!!! Thanks!

Hi sonicislnd (http://ubuntuforums.org/member.php?u=880970):

here's a couple of ideas

#1 You can indeed use ubuntu to salvage your xp, but in your case, sounds like your taking a step forward and two back. Can you still enter safe mode? If so, give aSquareFree a try. Been using it for years and it kicks virus butt. There is a learning curve, but they have an excellent forum and if you cant make heads or tales out of the report you can send the output to aSquare and they will analyaze it for you. Just use with care... http://www.emsisoft.com/en/software/free/

#2 There are lots of reasons your cd's may not be loading. Bad burn; do a checksum/check cd. Are you burning a low speed (4 to 6x)? Really need to defrag xp before installing ubuntu. Maybe you need to try a different version, whats your system specs? Have you tried to run live cd without installing it?

Got more ideas and who knows, maybe even an answer...

Well, this is a mean virus. It won't let me log into XP even in safe mode, and it has erased all previous reg points. So I can't get in, to defrag or anything. I was hoping to use Ubuntu to eliminate the virus on the drives that are infected, at least to get back into xp. Do you know what the cap and scroll lock blinking means? Anyway way to boot it from a memory stick in the usb in case this virus screwed with my dvd drive?

huh, some bad luck. I think your computer is not really compatibile with ubuntu but you did not mention any spec so we will never know for sure.

Ok, in your situation I would go and download this boot cd, in there you have every possible weapon for war!

I wouldn't mind Hiren's cd myself but how do you download it???

I would try with the Ubuntu alternative install version rather than the desktop ISO. This is a text based install and therefore you might not have the same problem with your graphics and by the time you do, you should be able to get into a terminal and fix it. The surest and fastest way to get the ISO is through torrent (link on Ubuntu download page) and make sure you 'Check disk for defects' (second option I think) before attempting to install.

Good luck

ps: As above, if you can not run Ubuntu 'Live', as in straight off the disk, you have hardware issues or a faulty disk.
