I've got this old IBM PC (300pl Pentium II 400mmx 32mb 4.2gb) and I'd like to install a lite ubuntu-based OS, so I've asked google, the results were either Xubuntu or U-lite. So I'd like some guidance please(witch will run better).

Xubuntu: website (http://www.xubuntu.org/) | requirements (http://www.xubuntu.org/get#requirements)
UbuntuLite: website (http://u-lite.org/) | requirements (http://u-lite.org/content/requirements)

Thanks in advance

Neither will run with only 32mb ram, sorry. :(
I would recommend 256mb minimum for anything in the Ubuntu family.

You might be able to run DSL (damn small linux), I know it works with 64mb...

If that's the case, you don't need to reinstall. Just 'sudo apt-get install xubuntu-desktop' or 'sudo apt-get install lxde', then log out and choose the new desktop environemnt from the login screen. :)

From U-lite website

Recommended configuration

* Pentium 2 or better
* 96MB of RAM or better
* 4GB Hard Drive or better

Found this on launchpad answers

For Xubuntu: To run the Desktop CD (LiveCD + Install CD), you need 128 MB RAM to run or 192 MB RAM to install. The Alternate Install CD only required you to have 64 MB RAM. To install Xubuntu, you need 1.5 GB of free space on your hard disk.
Once installed, Xubuntu can run with 64 MB RAM, but it is strongly recommended to use at least 128 MB RAM.

With your system doesn't meet the requirements. If you currently have one running you can try to install both and see which one works better.

You will not be able to install Ubuntu, let along run it, and I mean any version or derivative.
What you should be looking at is the following kind of OSs:

http://www.damnsmalllinux.org/

Installing is not a problem, I've done it once (on the same PC) and can do it again; the trick is:
unplug HDD --> plug it onto my other PC --> Install the OS --> unplug the HDD -- return it onto the Old PC --> Start the system

BTW, my other PC can handle the installation ( Pentium 4, 3.00GHz, 512MiB, 80GB)

So the thing is, i wanned to know which will be faster? not would I be able to intall it, and thancks for saying this

BTW, thanks Guys for your help I really appreciate it
