I just replaced the motherboard in my sons computer.
It doesn't have a cdrom drive and the mobo doesn't support booting from usb.

I can boot into the original install, but to get the orignal install to work I had to do various hacks (really old hardware)

Is there an apt-get/aptitude method of reinstalling the entire system, from within the system?

I would take out the hard drive and install Ubuntu and configure it the way you want using another computer to do this. Then put the hard drive bake into the laptop. You can buy an apapter kit from Ebay or Tiger direct for less then $20. Here are the sites.
