Will This Run? Ubuntu 8.04 333 MHz 128MB RAM 2.5MB video 6.5GB HD Pentium 2 Sony Vaio

All you guys with low end laptop systems, can you tell me if the following system will run with a graphical interface? No, I will not be doing any graphical effects nor movie editing. I will only use the machine to type text files and ftp them onto the web. I will surf the web. I will check my email. I might use Frostwire (I usually buy my stuff, but if it is not available in the stores, then I download it. For example, all my foreign language songs are downloaded.) That's it.

Is it possible to use the following machine for these activities in Ubuntu 8.04? With a graphical interface. I don't want a command line interface as I don't want to memorize any commands.

System:
333MHz Pentium II
128 MB RAM
2.5 MB video memory
6.5 GB hard drive
Sony Vaio

I will want to set-up a wireless network card:
Netgear MA401

I already read this thread: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Installation/SystemRequirements , but it is not clear whether it will run with a graphical interface or not because my system is in-between the absolute minimum and minimum requirements. Thanks.

You might want to try Puppy or DSL. It might be possible to install Xubuntu on your system, but I doubt it would run well.

yes you can run 8.04 with no problem I have a couple of old machines I play with and 8.04 runs better Windblows 98, but like the last poster said, the X shell would be a little faster, but hey try them all the price is right ! run them live and see which you prefer! :D

Puppy would be your best bet on that system; Ubuntu and its variants really aren't designed for low-spec hardware such as yours.

crunchbanglinux (http://crunchbanglinux.org/) seems nice as well.

Crunchbang is based on Ubuntu and really needs 256mb and a pentium 3 to "blossom" (in my experience). It will not be as fast as Puppy, DSL, SliTaz, etc. on very old hardware.

That being said, I love CrunchBang and would recommend it to anyone whose computer is capable of running Ubuntu, but who wants more speed (and crunch).
