i was just wondering if most netbooks are capable of running compiz and how big of a performance hit do they take?

It depends really, but I would not try compiz on a netbook.

I think I had wobbly windows going on an Asus Eee 701 with 8.04. But then I installed Fluxbox have never logged back into Gnome.
So, yes, it can be done.

My Eee PC 701 with 1GB RAM does Compiz pretty well (rotating cube, wobbly windows, etc.). That's about as low-end a netbook as you're gonna find. So I'd say that yes probably any newish netbook could handle Compiz.
