Has anyone ever thought of creating a Ubuntu internet radio station? One where DJs take turns playing music and take requests. They could even have contests where they give out some hardware or commercial linux software.

http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=ubuntu+radio&aq=f&oq=&aqi= I'm sorry, I just couldn't resist. But yeah, this seems like a pretty good idea if someone has the money to sink into it.

You have to pay a lot of fees to RIAA, otherwise it's illegal. They are even charging for singing Christmas Carols in charitable events (http://torrentfreak.com/charity-forced-to-pay-copyright-police-so-kids-can-sing-071209/) ;)

Unless you use stuff released under the CC license and similiar licenses.

Funny coincidence you should say that. Here is a thread I was checking out earlier today:

that would be the coolest thing ever

but who has the time and the money?

I looked it up and it is .02 per person per song for non commercial use. Or .14 for commercial.

though its 2c a song

ubuntu is free and its not raking in 250$ an upgrade like M$

doations will only get so far and then we would have to get sponsored or start charging or something and that would be following the steps of m$:(

Well I would rather not deal with commercials, fees, or counting how many people listen to each song. I guess it would be easier if you used CC music.

+1 on that

This site looks good.

They have tons of CC music that would be perfect for something like this. The also have music in other languages that would be nice for the wide variety of languages that ubuntu comes in.
