I've had a problem similar to this before. You can try backing up your bookmarks (~/.mozilla/firefox/lgip3q7y.default/bookmarkbackups/) then deleting your ~/.mozilla folder. The next time you open Firefox it will regenerate this folder. Then just move the backed up bookmarks to the proper location and reinstall your addons. Although this worked in my particular situation, as always, your mileage may vary. :)

Thanks - that fixed my probs too.

In addition to loss of back button, shortcuts, and no autocomplete - Firefox never seemed to finish loading a page, the little spinner in the tab bar would just keep on spinning for ever.

Tried re-installing, deleting everything I could think of, but I missed the ~/.mozilla dir.

Yay - all fixed now!
