No I just did not want to scare you and cause you to have nightmares by showing my ugly mug. (Also I do not have a digital camera and my web cam is not supported by Ubuntu.)

Rather large image 56k beware (http://lovesunix.net/desk.jpg)

That is my desk, while the desktop machine still ran Ubuntu (today it's a Fedora machine - my personal preference), the laptop is Ubuntu Dapper.

I swear it's less messy now.

*edit*

Forgot I was supposed to be in the picture, you'll have to make due with a seperate picture of me and my ex-girlfriend (http://lovesunix.net/daveandbabe.jpg)

Price (Desktop):
1600+ Athlon-XP, 1 gig of PC133, 120GB 7200 RPM 8 meg cache HD, ATI Radeon 9600XT (I want a 9250 again, it worked nicer with X.org).

Finlay (Laptop):
500 MHz Celeron, 256 megs of PC100, 6GB 5200 RPM HD, Savage IX (the X driver for this is so broken it's just not fun).

Yeah I know Fedora has it's perks though. It was actually my second linux tryout install. First one being Mandrake (Now Mandriva).

I've had several computers in the past though as well. I first started trying out Linux back when I had a Touch Turbo 486 33 to 100 mhz with a 1mb video card. I had Mandrake on that. It ran a lot better then Windows 98 at the time. And well with a 486, well Linux was greatly improved for my "Needs" with that kind of power.

Second Computer was an HP Vectra VL that started off with 350mhz and still the same 1mb video card, I just swaped it over until I figured out how to get the 8mb one Matrox Mil G200 working in Windows 98. Then at that point I put forth some upgrades to 500mhz, then up to 192mbs of ram. Then at that point I wasn't doing anything worth needing 98 for, so again I did Mandrake before I upgraded. After I upgraded to the 500mhz and such I got into 2 drives and one with Windows 2000 and the other with Fedora Core 3.

Eventually I saved money up and with the help of my tax return, I bought a nice Biostar K7 AMD chipset motherboard. I got an Nvidia Geforce 4 MX 4000 with 64mbs and then I upgraded to ATI Radeon 9200 T128. And today I have 1 gig of ram and the same video and mother board. Still runing a 2200+ AMD Semptron at 1.7 ghz. I can play America's Army and Sim City 4 on it and that being all I need it to do. At the point of my last upgrade for the new machine, I had Windows XP Professional and Fedora Core 4, but then "upgraded" the software to Ubuntu and XP. Now it's just Ubuntu with an extra storage drive for where I backed up all my Windows stuff like music and videos. Eventually I'll move it over to my main drive and repartition it to ext3 so I can remove the mont NTFS horse pucky off my boot.list

It may be an underpowered minimal in todays standards, but to hell with it, I'm used to being 7 years behind in technology. I'm happy with it.

I'd sure like to put up a pic of me and my ubuntu, but it wouldn't be that interesting. My beast of a machine is a server that I built (running Breezy server). I constructed it over the course of about six months, beginning about June '05. Here are the specs, and a link to some images of it in construction.

Xeon 3Ghz
Asus NCLV-D Dual Xeon MB
4x 74G WD Raptor [RAID5] /home
1x 36.7G WD Raptor /

Nice monitor! What was for breakfast? :D

Haha, thanks :) I'm quite happy with the monitor. It was incredibly cheap for a 19" LCD display of that quality. I recommend it to everyone - Samsung SyncMaster 913B.

Breakfast was blueberry/raspberry flavoured soured milk (is it called soured milk?), and - as you can see - heap loads of orange juice ;)

Soured milk, I think that's known as yoghurt in the rest of the world... Eeewww... way too healthy for me.

Yoghurt is something different (at least in sweden it is;)). I'm not going to seriously try to explain the difference, but soured milk (or filmjölk in swedish) is more sour and less sweet than yoghurt, and goes great with cornflakes :D

Ngeee! That's twice I've been called that today.

The first was for saying I preferred the 2005 Ford GT40 to the 1960's version...

I dont know how they can call the 2005 model a GT40 seeing it is 43inches high off the ground as opposed to the original which is 40inches and that is where the name came from.

How do you get into one of those cars when you are parked in a normal parking lot, you have to open the door the entire way in order to get into the thing.

They (Ford) don't.
http://www.caranddriving.com/exchange/ncrt_c.asp?id=%7BFD2BCBCE-8BF5-4D1A-87D5-1C6769A82209%7D&maker=FORD

In case you were wondering why it’s a Ford GT and not a GT40, the answer is simple.
Ford sold the rights to the GT40 name to Safir Engineering, a British company that produced beautifully finished mega-money replicas of the GT40.

Ford know that most are still going to refer to the car as the GT40 despite it measuring 43 inches high

Ok, so the laptop's running XP, but it's not mine so I can't 'fix' it.

Nice pic! Just wondering though, do you have two keyboards on your computer or do you have two computers hooked up to one monitor? Funny side note, my son is better with a mouse than he is with crayons :D

do you have two keyboards on your computer or do you have two computers hooked up to one monitor?Neither. The other one is for when I'm fixing a different computer or whatever. I transfer the monitor, but use a seperate keyboard. So right now it's not connected.
Incidentally, I discovered that with a dual-input printer (parallel and USB) you can connect two computers and share it. Although I'm not sure what happens if you try to print from both at once... One way to find out I suppose...

Oh O.K. I was just curious. I've got two hooked up to one monitor with a kvm switch and I was just wondering if you had some kind of a splitter instead. Me thinks I over analyzed it. <LOL>:)

Ha, that's great that you have a photo of your daughter blowing out a dandelion on wikipedia!

My ubuntu photo is my avatar. I don't use desks for computers (although that will change in a few weeks when I get a scanner). They take up too much room, and I think computers are ugly. I try to hide them as much as I can.

As you can see from the photo, I'm a lounger.

Ha, that's great that you have a photo of your daughter blowing out a dandelion on wikipedia!I thought for a while about that... Sure, I think it's a great picture, but that's because I took it, and it's my daughter. I wondered at first if it might be considered a little self indulgent. But look at it objectively, and it does illustrate the point.
Then I thought, 'well if my peers don't approve, they can scratch it', no worries. So far they haven't.

I took it a step further, there's one of me in there too, somewhere. In fact, I have a few photos. Not sure if you can search by contributor though, and you'd need to know that I like things that go bang to find it...

What's this, treasure hunt? :-k

Well, since my MicroDrive bit the dust I only have some fresh crappy phone-camera pictures. But hell, it's better than nothing.]

http://www.derekdjons.nl/ubuntu/001.jpg
At the left you'll be seeing mine notebook. It's an Acer TravelMate 290 clone. The only thing what is different is the name on it. It's got an Intel Pentium Mobile 1500MHz, 512MB memory and a 40Gb harddrive and of course the lovely Intel 2200BG Wireless Lan Card.
On the right you'll be seeing an old 17" inch CRT display which for some vague reason I still haven't replaced with an TFT panel.

http://www.derekdjons.nl/ubuntu/002.jpg
On the right you are looking at my 'for all purposes' box. I call it WildChild. It's got a MSI K8T Neo 2 motherboard, an AMD Sempron 2600+, a Radeon 9700 Pro, 512MB DDR 400, Seagate 80GB Harddrive and some more PCI cards.

On the left you're looking at DASH. It's my Pentium III 800Mhz server which I got for free from a co-worker several months ago. I use it for download and storage. I don't have a monitor hooked up. I use VNCVIEWER in order to login and maintain the server.

http://www.derekdjons.nl/ubuntu/003.jpg
To the far left you'll see an 20 inch LCD-TV which... (I'm so frickin' lucky :)) I also got for free. It's some unknown brand but that doesn't matter. Watching TV on it is just sweet (640x480 max resolution).

http://www.derekdjons.nl/ubuntu/004.jpg
Here's an picture of my work. I work at an Apple Centre. The fun part of my job is I get to work on two locations. This picture is from Naarden. It's an small town in The Netherlands where a lot of rich people live and come to check out the house / lifestyle boulevard. In that building (called 'Het Arsenaal') there's an tiny Apple shop where I work and get my hands on a PowerMac G5 Dual Processor and a 20" Cinema Display :)

http://www.derekdjons.nl/ubuntu/005.jpg
And finally, this is me! :) No more short hair as on my avatar but that's going to change soon again.

Are we still doing this one?

I've moved things a little. That thing on the right side is my latest project.
An old ATX case, but inside it's all pretty new. Athlon 2400+, GeForce4, 512MB, 80GB. Ok, it's not going to set any records, but it's a lot faster than what was originally in there. A lot hotter too, which created its own set of problems.

Anyway, on top of that is my new printer, Konica 2400W colour laser. Don't buy one if you want to use linux, buy the 2430 instead. I didn't have a choice, and this one is going in the internet cafe anyway.

Just visible on the left is my next project, putting a similar hotrod cpu in this (http://www.geocities.com/xmastree_ph/386).

Between them is the same setup as before, only I borrowed the hard drive caddy for the retro box.
