I just upgraded my laptop from 8.10 to Jaunty and seem to have a problem shutting down and restarting. When I choose ether, ubuntu screen closes and I get a blank (black) screen with a flashing sensor in the top left hand corner and the computer doesn't shut down. In order to restart I need to detach the electric wire and take out the battery.

There must be a better way. Help please.

I've got that problem with 9.04 on a x86_64 desktop, a bug has been filed.

'sudo poweroff' or 'sudo shutdown -P now' should work.
