Which Ubuntu are you going to install?

9.04, 8.10, 8.04?

Check out this video. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w8a-smrPlvE&hd=1)

This page from Ubuntu.com shows the install process. (https://help.ubuntu.com/community/GraphicalInstall)

Because you presented only 2 options and you choose to dual-boot, then you have to do it MANUALLY.... as I'm wondering why you don't have guided-resize.

Do you want to ceate the partitions prior to installing? Or do you want to do it during the install process?

Some reading materials:

http://members.iinet.net/~herman546/index.html
http://apcmag.com/how_to_dualboot_vista_with_linux_vista_installed_f irst.htm

While you're reading and preparing yourself for the task, back-up your files first and then defrag your windows installation.

Have you checked for defects, md5 (https://help.ubuntu.com/community/HowToMD5SUM) and tried the liveCD?

+1 on using Wubi.

Wubi is a great way to sample Ubuntu.

I have seen a case where the user couldn't do downloads due to space allocation. So, if you do a lot of downloads you could run into problems.
