View Full Version : [ubuntu] Firefox 3.5.1?

July 21st, 2009, 12:42 PM
Just curious, why has Firefox still not been updated to 3.5.1? I can download it for myself from mozilla.org but how does one integrate it properly (Firefox 3 still keeps starting up[1])? The Firefox 3.5 in apt-get is a nightly release IINM?

[1] Indeed how do I get Opera to reliably be the default browser - Firefox keeps popping up for documentation etc.

I have the same trouble getting 3.5 to run.

I installed 3.5 over the terminal and the SPM. But how can I make the shortcut starts FF 3.5 ??

I use Ubuntu 9.04 32 Bit Desktop

Go to Applications | Internet

Right click on "Shiretoko Web Browser" and click "Add this launcher to panel".

Shiretoko is FF 3.5 until the branding changes in Karmic.

The icon will be different than your FF icon for now.

Best way and very easy way is to use Ubuntu's Firefox PPA (https://launchpad.net/%7Eubuntu-mozilla-daily/+archive/ppa).

I'm using the version from the Jaunty repos right now and, other than a couple of add-ons I had to replace, it's working great. I've noticed a definite speed increase. Too bad it isn't as fast as chromium -- if chromium supported Flash at the moment, I'd consider switching.

Thanks all for the responses! I didn't understand the 6 month no new versions stipulation of Ubuntu, so understand why 3.0.11 is currently the "latest" Firefox officially supported, and that I must wait for KK for an official FF 3.5.

The PPA/Shiretoko options work well enough, and I'll put up with FF 3.0.x popping up when i don't want.
