Ubuntu 8.04.3 this has been noticed - the shutdown ends with a blank screen but the hard drive light is still on.

This has been ignored in the past and the power button held down to force a power off (!) however, recently a problem occurred at a start up:
fsck died with exit status 4
:-(
this needed a repair.

No reason for this fault can be seen and the possibility of the inadequate shut down as a cause has been suggested.

In this machine though, if the user wishes to shut down, but first logs out, and *then* chooses shutdown, a clean proper shutdown seems to happen.

Hope this helps somebody?
