Black screen after installation screen loads

Hello all!1st of all i want to say i have no experience with Xubuntu or Ubundu i am a complete noob so if you are willing to help me you have to be precise and patient :P
Well i tried to install Xubuntu 9.04 of my old laptop Toshiba Satellite 1800 series but when installing after the bar under the Xubundu logo is completed i get a black screen.I tried to boot from disk but the same thing happens.I have also checked the disk and its fine no errors on it.
Laptop specs is
P3E 1000Mhz
256Mb ram
18Gb Hd
Trident video accelerator Cyberblade-Ai1

I ve googled the issue and in my concusion is a graphics card problem but the fact is that i m too unfamiliar how to move with Xubuntu and how to fix the issue.

Boot the live CD and hit F4 and choose safe graphics mode. Then continue with the install. If that doesn't work then try the alternate text based installer from here: http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/downloadmirrors#alternate

I have tried safe graphics mode and it didnt work! i m now downloading alternative ubuntu version to see if it works
edit: ok i have manage to install ubuntu using the alternative version...but now when i boot into ubunto after loading is done again i get a black screen and i cant see anything :( help

it is possible that your hardware for whatever reason is not compatible; I know that in order to boot fedora I have to add bt acpi=off irqpoll to the command argument at boot; while fedora boots fine on my other computer.
