newbie need help with ubuntu 9.04

Hi all, I have an old laptop (compaq presario 700z -- AMD duron 1Ghz) I downloaded Ubuntu 9.04 and followed the direction to do clean install. after I am done, I shut turned off the laptop. when I go to turn it on again it said " Operation system not detected". I thought I did something wrong, so I re-install again 3 times already...and still each time it restarted or reboot, it would say " Operation system not detected". does anyone know whats going on? this is my first time installing linux on any computer...so any information and direction is much appreciated. thanks

Did you install it or just used live cd ?

and what is your boot order in bios ?

its not a live CD....as I was following the instruction posted on multiple website...also I can hear its writing to my hard drive...also after installation, it kick the cd out.

boot order

1. Hard Drive
2. CD/dvd drive
3. floppy

I downloaded Ubuntu 9.04

1) How did you download ubuntu?

2) If not using a torrent, did you md5sum the download?
