I wiped my friend's windows XP and tried installing ubuntu. I selected English, it got through the thingy where it goes back and fourth, then it started to load (bar goes from left to right) then it goes into a bunch of command prompt looking stuff. It stops on Starting Bluetooth and doesn't go anywhere from there with some error of 120 seconds.

have you tried other distributions, in order to establish a pattern?

By distributions what do you mean? I've tried 8.10 and 9.04. Also tried openSUSE and xubuntu. xubuntu had the same result and SUSE had errors too.

Download fresh copy Ubuntu 9.04 (32 bit) and follow this guide:

http://howtoforge.org/the-perfect-desktop-ubuntu-9.04

This worked for me on a 8 year old Asus laptop and also a new Dell XPS 1530.

Also did you wipe the old xp drive clean using something like DBAN?

Have you tried to boot from CD?
