I looked through the list of machines that have been tested with Ubuntu and didn't see the A1050S4384. I did see other Satellite A105's but not mine. Should I attempt installation or is it too risky? Thanks, John

Try the liveCD. If it works, a regular install will probably also work. Or, if you have windows, try Wubi: http://wubi-installer.org/

I tried Wubi on my L305-s5968 - Wouldn't boot and it locked up the machine so tight, I had to remove the battery. I might have messed up, but since I already have one Ubuntu machine I won't try that again.

Should have followed the advice and tried the LiveCD mode first. According to Google, your machine has an Intel GMA video chip -- and 9.04 is known to have problems with Intel chips. If you booted from a LiveCD and got no display, that would have clued you in to video problems.
