Hello all! I have set up a Linux Club in My Locality, and am trying to popularise Ubuntu in Indian Areas. So, we have used UCK to create Customized versions of Ubuntu according to the needs of various people. For example,
As for Microsoft Student, we user Edubuntu. For Microsoft Office, we use Open Office and KOffice. For Windows Media Player, we use GNOME Player, VLC And GStreamer. So, I am preparing a list of various applications we have selected to include in our Customized Ubuntu, to be distributed among the people in our localities. Will you kindly check once, and suggest if anything better is available for a specific category? And, what should I use in Ubuntu for sophisticated Notebooks such as One-Note?
The list:
Office :Open Office
Multimedia Player :GStreamer, VLC and GNOME player
Simple Notebook :Rednotebook/Tomboy/Kjots
Finances :KMyMoney
Personal Organizer :KOrganizer
Antivirus :Avast (for scanning .exe)
Image Editing :GIMP
Instant messaging :)Pidgin,Kopete,aMSN
Meeting :GNOME-Meeting
Mail :)KShowmail
3D Studio :K3D, Maya
Paint :Tux Paint, GNU Paint
Project:KPLATO
Many other categories are there, but these are the important ones, which are needed by other people.

You may include a media center application too . XBMC or MOOVIDA will be better. Try both of them and find which among them is better. In my opinion, amaroK is the best music player for linux. For a list of video editing applications, visit http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1174486 . You can find a lot of good apps in www.qt-apps.org ,www.kde-apps.org, etc. Go to one of these sites. You will see links to other sites which offer free, good apps. For an alternative to daemon tools, use acetoneiso .for other daemon tools alternatives, visit http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1183027 . Don't forget to include wine and playonlinux for running windows applications in linux. You may include kde desktop environment instead of Gnome in Ubuntu(it's your personal preference)for more visual appeal.I too am going to make a custom Ubuntu to distribute among my friends

Agree with the first, disagree with the second. LaTeX and OpenOffice are made for different purposes and none can universally replace the other.

LaTeX isn't a perfect alternative for microsoft office.

Works fine for me, haven't touched an `office' suite since learning LaTeX. You can tell the difference between a word processor document and a LaTeX document just by looking at it, word documents look awful.
