I there such thing? Is it an equivalent and as powerful as mod_php? Are there hosting providers with it?

I've never used it, but it is available as an Apache module.

I noticed that gmail pages has a .py extension. Are they using mod_python?

I use mod-python. It works fine. The pages I wrote, the URLs don't end in .py. In fact, the URL http://website/thingy/wotsit would summon function wotsit() in thingy.py. Or if thingy.py didn't exist, would summon function index() in thingy/wotsit.py.
