gnome crashes after login

Hello

I just did a first time ubuntu 9.04 x64 installation on a samsung notebook,
but when I try to login to gnome I hear a short sound and and see a black screen and then the notebook restarts. the terminal login works.
any ideas? in which logfiles should I look?

What model?

What CPU?

How much RAM?

What was the original operating system?

Could it be a netbook?

No it's not a netbook.
i installed the 32bit version now which works. though i'm curious, why the 64bit version didn't. the cpu is an intel T3200 which supports intel 64.
