2007-2009 OS & Browser stats

Just been looking over the w3counter stats for the past 2 years. May 2007, May 2008 & June 2009, which counts only the top 10 % wise..

Web browsers

2007-2008-2009:
Mozilla - 25.28% - 29.48% - 31.91%
Microsoft - 66.69% - 61.56% - 56.92%
Apple - 1.85% - 2.16% - 2.12%

Operating Systems

2007-2008-2009:
Linux - 1.26% - 1.95% - 2.11%
Microsoft - 93.60% - 91.11% - 88.76%
Apple - 3.77% - 4.73% - 5.65%

So some things seem clear, and that is Microsoft is losing marketshare on all fronts. FOSS is gaining rapidly on the browser side, and on the OS side. Apple is doing well on the OS side, but not so much on the browser side. This would probably explain why Microsoft is now giving out free 'tempters' of it's new OS, and why Apple is trying to stifle browser standards (like video support in HTML5).

Interesting to note is the gap between Linux and Apple which is closing. In 2007, Linux users were only about a third as many as Apple users, today they are closing to half.

Another interesting point is that an 8 year old version of Windows is still the most used version, and Vista will probably never come anywhere near reaching 1/4 of the uptake that XP saw. Also, it's been about 2 months since Windows 7 was offered to the public free of charge, yet it only has about 0.2%. This would tend to indicate most Microsoft users are only Microsoft users because that's what comes on their computer, rather than actually wanting it, even when it's free. It is only a Release Candidate, so that must be taken into consideration, but I personally though it would've had a much larger uptake, if we consider the hype surrounding it.

They don't add up to 100. I never trust percentages that don't add up to 100%. There seems to be something missing.

I personally surf UF using a tin can and a piece of string.

I thought it was darn thoughtful of the UF admins to keep the tin can interface up and running on their end.

Considering Desktop Linux is at half Apple's share, that's pretty good for an organisation (if you could call it that) with little advertising budget. If 10% was reality I could see an increasing amount of driver support. Many companies already provide Mac drivers, so more Linux drivers would be a possibility here.

Never heard of the snowball effect?

The rate at which Linux is growing is actually increasing phenomenally each year. It doesn't show in just those 3 years of stats, but if you go back a bit further, you'll see it's growing much more rapidly than any other OS ever has. Also, Linux is catching up on OSX, so it won't be that long before it is actually second.

Microsoft profits down by a third

Microsoft said it expected another tricky quarter.

Microsoft has reported disappointing results for the April to June quarter, with profits down by almost a third.

Net profit for the period was $3.1bn (£1.9bn), down by 29% from the same period a year earlier. Revenue came in at $13.1bn, down 17% from a year ago.

The results were worse than analysts had been expecting.

The world's largest software maker said it had been affected by weakness in the global personal computer (PC) and server markets.

Cost cutting

In after hours trading, Microsoft shares fell more than 7%, reflecting the market's disappointment with the results.

"It looked like a pretty tough quarter for Microsoft. The top line was very weak," said Toan Tran at Morningstar.

The one bright spot was the company's cost-cutting measures.

"In light of the environment, it was an excellent achievement to deliver over $750m of operational savings compared with the prior year quarter," said Chris Liddell, Microsoft's finance chief.

Microsoft makes most of its profit selling the Windows operating system and business software such as Office.

However, demand has been hit by falling sales of PCs as consumers and businesses trim spending.

Microsoft - which became a public company in 1986 - has been looking at ways of cutting costs.

In January, it said it would cut up to 5,000 jobs over the next 18 months, including 1,400 immediately.

Increasing pressure

To make matters worse, the company is coming under increasing pressure from internet search engine Google, which recently announced a better-than-expected rise in second quarter profits.

Google is developing an operating system for personal computers in a direct challenge to market leader Microsoft and its Windows system.

Microsoft itself is poised to launch its new operating system, Windows 7, this autumn.
