Building/Developing with kdelibs

I am trying to embed the katepart widget in a mainly qt application. I have been trying to follow this tutorial: http://kate-editor.org/article/embedding_katepart_in_your_application . I first downloaded the kdelibs from svn and they failed to compile. What is the best way to go about this especially since katepart is the only kde component I need? Would it just be easiest if I did a full install of a KDE desktop environment?
