I am using ubuntu 8.04.2 LTS. I keep pec updated.
Off late sometimes when i boot the pc thereis a blank screen.
I have to got to the coomand line ctrl-alt-f1 and after logging in I delete the /tmp/.X0-lock filr. Then the gui canbe launced.
Further the pc has become slow.
I want to solve this problem once for all .
could any body suggest a solution?

Re-installation would be a much more fruitful method to solve your pc getting slow issue.
