I need to make .gif's. What would be the software to turn to?

Gimp would work.

kolourpaint would also work, if you want something simpler.

It works fine on 98 and XP not sure about Vista but should work.
Just make the image you want in bmp for best results then open Giffy point to the picture file and convert it.
No install is required unless you want context menu to run the program.
