If you want a backup copy of a partition or of a whole hard disk on an external hard drive on which you already have stuff, you have to do "partition to image" and NOT "device to device".
"Device to device" will erase EVERYTHING on your external hard drive. It warns you but it says so many things that it is easy to overlook the warning.
Apart from that it works great after being booted from a cd (free download and burn).
