I plan on partitioning my hard drive 75% Xp and 25% Ubuntu, and I found this guide:
http://apcmag.com/how_to_dual_boot_windows_xp_and_linux_xp_installed _first.htm?page=4

I was wondering if it is really this straightforward, or should I try another method?

Sure.

And if you want to compare notes with another documentation/source:

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/GraphicalInstall
http://members.iinet.net/~herman546/index.html
http://www.ubuntupocketguide.com/index_main.html
http://www.psychocats.net/ubuntu/index

Now, if you want to try partitioning yourself:

http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=282018&highlight=separate+%2Fdata+partition
http://gparted.sourceforge.net/larry/resize/resizing.htm

Tips:

1. Back-up first
2. Download and burn the iso at the slowest possible speed to minimize burining errors
3. When you boot into the liveCD
a. Check for defects and md5
b. "Try Ubuntu without changing" option gives you the opportunity to see how your version reacts with your system (wifi, keyboard, sound, etc)
4. When happy, install.

Good luck.

So basically it partitions itself like I thought? Thank you by the way.

If you wish to share your 'plan-of-action' with the forum for commenting and more advise, pls. do so.

You're one step ahead already by reading and researching what entails when one installs Ubuntu. Conratulations. That will minimize frustrations later on.

Back-up. I may sound like an old, broken record but ... there are no gurantees.

FWIW, the OP opened another thread, and is in the midst of installing.
