I apologize first, because I know there are multiple guides for this sort of thing. But either I'm just doing everything wrong, or they aren't made for what I am trying to do. I have a 701SD asus eee pc. I am trying to get ubuntu on this computer. How ever, it has no cd drive, which makes his a little more difficult. I do however have an external hard drive, I don't know if that helps or not. All the guides say flash stick, and I don't know whether they are the same thing or not.

Here are the links I've been trying to use:

https://help.ubuntu.com/9.04/installation-guide/i386/boot-usb-files.html
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Installation/FromUSBStick
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/EeePC/Installation

Basically my question, is there anyway I can get ubuntu on my eee pc by using my external hard drive, and if so, how, in plain english, do I go about getting this done?

Thanks!

I recommend an inexpensive 1gb USB flash drive.

Then, you can install Ubuntu Netbook Remix following these instructions:
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Installation/FromImgFiles

Or "regular" Ubuntu using Unetbootin:
http://unetbootin.sourceforge.net/

I do not recommend using an external hard drive that already has data, because you run the risk of destroying that data if you make a mistake. :) A 1gb thumb drive is cheap and safer. Good luck!

With UNetbootin, how do I go about using that? It confused me a little bit. Do I download it on the computer I'm on right now, (WinXP), run UNetbootin, and load the iso for ubuntu onto the flash ? Then after that, plug it into my eee?

That is exactly correct, you don't sound confused at all. :)
