Thanks. im running ubuntu 8.04. I dont think i can provide anymore information, as the mini will not start up. Everytime i power it on, i see request to run tests. I run the tests and nothing happens. It wont boot up normally. I tried reinstalling, but it doesnt get very far. In a few, i will take a pic of the screen i get everytime i try to boot up. Please bare with me.

That doesn't look like an Ubuntu install screen. I don't think you are booting from the cd. First if I was you I would find a place to download or get the latest version of Ubuntu. Version 9.04.
Is your CD drive plugging into the USB. I don't know much about the mini, because I do not have one. If it is you might need to boot from the USB first to get the system to start the install.
Try this, it might work.

The CD drive is plugged into the usb. I am booting from the cd/dvd drive. When i select to boot from hard drive or anything else, it gets me know where.

I don't know about anyone else, but I can't see whats on the screen at all. But that earlier pic looks like something the Mini's BIOS runs, so that's not the Ubuntu installer. Like mentioned above, see if you can set it to boot from USB.

So since your CD drive is plugged into usb, boot from usb, not cd/dvd drive. If you're BIOS doesn't support USB booting, you're stuck in the same boat as me.

Why don't you try to installing from a USB stick.
Here is a link on how to do this:

Try downloading the Ubuntu Alternate CD and installing from that. http://releases.ubuntu.com

Booting from USB is not an option, only removable devices, cd/dvd. hard drive, network boot.

I am in the same boat. I have a new dell mini that we got at a bargin, but there are no admin rights on any of the users, so I have been told that I will need to reload the ubuntu. I have a USB that I have the OS using unitbootin to create the file. It seems to start ok, but after a while an error message comes up saying that the partition is not large enough.

What do I do?

USB is a removable device. Exactly what options are listed in the boot menu?

when going thru the setup, i see the USB option, but after saving and closing, then pressing "0" to go to the boot screen, USB is not an option. Thanks everyone for your help. The mini is on its way back to dell for fixing.

have you cecked if your USB port is recognized? In windows, try to plug in a thumb drive to access any data on it.

Have you tried a live USB (https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Installation/FromUSBStick) as mentioned previously?

Good luck.

If it's that new, have you called Dell to ask them what is going on? They might get it going for you and if not they might then tell you to send it back.
