I have done much reading and much researching forums to try to figure out why none of the games i've tried to install will work. I've tried installing Doom 3. It gets partially installed then give me the following error......Error: -1603 Fatal Erro During Installation Consult Windows Installer Help (Msi.chm) or MSDN for more help
I am using Wine to try and install this. I have also had problems with getting my Bioshock to work as well. I have installed PlayOnLinux thinking that would help and can't even seem to get that to work.

Have you considered that these are windows games and you are using Linux?

well i read that Doom 3 was compatible ubuntu on several different occasions. i understand that there are certain games that can't be played but why would the ubuntu/linux people put out a program like Wine if you weren't supposed to be able to load/install certain windows software onto the computer? that just doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me.

"The ubuntu people" as you call them, didn't put out Wine. And Wine is for more basic programs, games need all kinds of drivers, extra programs like DirectX and so on. That's why it's a hassle for developers to try and make games for both Linux and Windows, thus only ultra popular games like World of Warcraft are available to Linux.

If you're going to use Wine, you need to first check out the CodeWeavers app compatibility page to see how well your specific app will work.
The link below is to their page for Doom 3 -- and it clearly shows a rating of "Garbage", meaning, the app won't run no matter what you do:
http://appdb.winehq.org/objectManager.php?sClass=application&iId=1278
You should check out your other apps at the same site.
The "people" that put out Wine is CodeWeavers, and it's a free version of their CrossOver suite that they sell. It has nothing to do with the Ubuntu "people" -- Canonical.

There is a long list of Linux games on
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/category:Linux_games
and more on http://games.linux.sk/
More than you will have dreamed of.

So many people commenting about why it WON'T work, and nobody commenting with how it DOES work, when done correctly:
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Doom3
That page details how to get and install the linux version of Doom 3....
