What's the best web host and domain register? My friend told me about a host called HostExcellence. And from their guide, it seems like an excellent host, only about 4 dollars a month for one domain and one host, all the other plans are upgraded by adding windows features. Linux servers ftw. Can anyone beat 4 dollars a month?

My favorite registrar is GoDaddy. They have both good prices and good services. Their domain control panel is very easy to use as well, especially if you have more than one domain. :)

I'm not sure what kind of storage / bandwidth requirements you have, but Five Bean (http://fivebean.com) does have some plans for less than $4 a month. I just signed up with them about a week ago and I am very satisfied so far.

Probably, yeah. I mean, I don't have my own web server, but it could be cheaper to have your own web server rather than paying someone else to host it for you. :P

Well, I don't really agree, keeping your computer on for a month would add up to more money than some hosts I see!

Electrcity bill-wise, it would be expensive. But I would still do it :D

Lighting and A/C is more expensive than running a computer, in my humble opinion.

If he's going to host at his house he'd better have a good upload speed.

I've been pretty happy with ICDSoft. Price per month and empty promises about "unlimited bandwidth" can be tempting, but what about reliability, longevity, or customer service?

Comparatively, my upload sucks, lol.

1Mb its fine, you don't gonna get toooooooooooooooooooooooo much trafic,
if you have more traffic than Facebook, then pay an syncronic.

Keep in mind that it is usually illegal to run a server from a residential connection. From Comcast's AUP:

You may not:

use or run dedicated, stand-alone equipment or servers from the Premises that provide network content or any other services to anyone outside of your Premises local area network (“Premises LAN”), also commonly referred to as public services or servers. Examples of prohibited equipment and servers include, but are not limited to, e-mail, Web hosting, file sharing, and proxy services and servers;

It depends on what your looking for. I'm NOT a big fan of shared hosting and VPS hosting is so cheap these day's I'd go a for a VPS. It depends on what your hosting too and how much traffic you're going to see on your server. For a personal site a shared hosting service might be ok... However since I don't use any shared hosting, I can't tell you which one is good.

I use hostmysite.com for my VPS servers and I highly recommend them for that. It runs me about $30/month per VPS. I get root access to the server, plesk control panel, and can host unlimited domains on each VPS. Their tech support is very good and usually respond right away, even for minor issues.

I use namecheap for my domain registrations. I've made the mistake in the past of using two different services to register domain names, don't do this! I lost a couple of domains because of this. It makes things more complicated and harder to track, once you go with one domain registration service like godaddy, stick with them.

I use Heart Internet.

- Good support
- User friendly UI
- Reasonably priced for domain names and hosting

Been with them for about 3 years, no problems whatsoever.

I use Dreamhost (http://www.dreamhost.com/hosting.html) for our library website. Great reliability, Debian servers, & the ever so popular unlimited bandwidth & databases. The UI is pretty good too.

Well..... That would get a lot of people I know in trouble. It's ridiculous.
