i realized that i have been using the 32 bit version of ubuntu, when my laptop is capable of using the 64 bit version. is there a real difference between the two where i should reinstall it?

If you have less than 4 gbs of ram, then no, unless you do a lot of photo downloading or movie editing or something else that is cpu intensive.
