Hi Everyone,

last week i install ubuntu 8.04 (windows Xp was already there).

After that i tried to install mplayer and vlc player from the source packages since i do not have internet connection in my PC but failed to do so since everytime is give one error or other
(the first one was compiler unable to make executables , then i tried build essential command it show package not found and then i used the installation CD to install build esstential. It got installed. Then i again tried ./configure command i got some libraries are not found. I installed them from install CD. Then again i got error like gclib library version is belong to 2.5 to 2.7 which is buggy version so the ./configure command was not able to build any thing.)

Then i bring .deb file for mplayer and Vlc palyer for ubuntu 8.04. When i put them in my desktop and double clicked it . It again showing many dependencies are not there. So not able to install these players.

Then i brought ubuntu 8.10 version CD (desktop)so that to upgrade it to 8.10 and then to 9.04 so that i will have latest files. But the CD is not asking for doing upgrade. it is giving option of install.

So i do not know what to do next.

can any one please tell me the link for which i should download these player for my 8.04 version ubuntu. And they will get install. Or tell me the list of dependencies which i should install so there will be no dependency on any packages.

i do not have internet connection so for solving every error i have to go internet cafe. Then i bring some solution for it. This have taken my 7-8 day without any meaning full result.

Hi, to upgrade ubuntu to 8.10 you need to use the Alternate cd (http://noncdn.releases.ubuntu.com/jaunty/), to install the software you want you can either manually download the deb and the dependencies from here (http://packages.ubuntu.com/). If you want to download the deb packages and all their dependencies automatically you can use a program called Keryx (http://keryxproject.org/) and a good walk through tutorial can be found here (http://crashsystems.net/2009/01/keryx-tutorial/).

Thanks for your early response. I started downloading 8.10 alternate and 9.04 alternate.
Today evening i will work out your method in my home pc.And if i will face any issue i will post it here tomorrow.
