Also, from DELL:
http://www.engadget.com/2008/09/22/dell-teases-with-17-inch-quad-core-laptop-with-16gb-of-memory/

Dell would require desktop chipsets in this laptop/portable to offer a specific feature as opposed to a particular function because, ofcourse, Intel mobile "chipsets" support a max of 8GB....if I remember correctly.

Man that Corsair looks so damn inviting....except for the price ofcourse.

Don't you wish you had 16GB of RAM?

I can't even use the 2GB that I've got, except if I run Virtualbox. I don't know why/how you would need 16GB on a desktop, unless for some insanely complex game or something.

Wouldn't 16 GB of RAM slow your computer down?

My work machine is an HP xw8600 with 32GB of ram and a Quadro FX 4800 video card. I've never tapped it out yet, but I have allocated about 26GB of RAM on it doing various things. Phenomenal machine.

An example of applications with high RAM usage:

As you can see, it adds up fast. When performing complicated tasks in Adobe After Effects would ramp up the RAM usage even more.

Not if you loaded all your apps in it at boot =D

No, I wouldn't know where I would need that much memory for.

No, what makes you think it would slow your computer down?

Nah, the general rule is that the more RAM you have the speedier your comp is, to a certain extent.

imho, currently 16 GiB RAM is just overkill

If i could afford to buy this, i definitely will try installing a virtual box in the virtual box of my ubuntu . Some one gave it a try???:guitar:

That's just a random core i7 board from newegg. As you can see, mobo's that support 24 GB DDR3 ram and 4 PCI-E slots aren't really all that expensive. Personally, I can't wait until I have an excuse to build a new rig.

I tried that. I got as far as installing virtualbox in the guest OS, but it won't let you install a guest inside a guest.

Overkill to the max man. If you bought it now you're taking it to the point that any potential benefit it could offer is gone.

Funny to think though... back when my folks got their first computer for five grand it came with a whopping 16MB of RAM. In about 14 years the standard has increased one thousand-fold (okay, 1024-fold, smartarses)

DDR2?
8GB of DDR3 would be a way better upgrade than 16gb of ddr2

If it was DDR3 I would be awed too.

The latency on the RAM posted in the OP stinks. ...if it was DDR3 RAM that level of latency would be acceptable. Heck- you can get DDR2-1200mHz RAM, why would ANYONE want 6 latency 800mHz RAM?

Stan_1936

you goina force DDR3 RAM into a DDR2 supported system?

you goina force DDR3 RAM into a DDR2 supported system?

As I said-there is FAR faster DDR2 that can be had that is MUCH cheaper-i.e. 1200mHz....the only way that RAM package would be worth it is if the latency was half what it is.

That RAM is some of the SLOWEST DDR2 800mHz RAM that is sold.

If it was the fastest version I would love to have 16GB (would need to install Ubuntu 64bit, but thats trivial) of course I would want to make sure I had a quad core processor and a 512MB+ Graphics card as well. For one tricked out system ^.^ And I could run 8GB to Ubuntu and another 8GB to VMing Windows 24/7 to keep my magicjack online and play win only games ^.^ But I can only dream atm. ^.^

Hmm, I'm currently using 11GBs of hard disk space, so I would still be left with 5GBs of free memory even if I loaded everything from my hard disk to memory :P

You mean it can detect that the environment you are using to install is in a virtual box and halt the process???

The above are my desktop specs. The only thing I ever use even my 8GB of ram for is assigning 4GB to windows and 4GB to ubuntu in windows as a VMbox. I run ubuntu in one of the 25inch screens for general usage and windows in one for gaming. Two OS's one bad *** machine. :)

Oh, and when in ubuntu I run windows 7 in a vbox 3.0 beta to test out virtualized directx. It's still not there yet. When it gets there I'll be getting rid of the windows partition all together.

I actually think I'd have a use for that much-- mirroring commonly-used but rarely-modified files in ramdisks.

Hi there Toupeiro, I just got a HP xw8600 Workstation from work, it's preloaded with 32 bit XP, what a waste!!! I am thinking to load Ubuntu onto it to dual-boot between XP and Ubuntu, because the company policy only allow me to use XP (don't ask me why). Which version of the Ubuntu are you using on your xw8600 workstation, do you have any trouble with the drivers for any components? Thanks!
