Wow! The popularity of the Ubuntu forums can't be denied!

While not Ubuntu specific, I don't know what I'd do without the Firefox extension: Scrapbook

Just thought I'd throw this out there for anyone wondering how to search, save and manage all this great community information.

Right, it's an excellent way of keeping track of data you get from the web, and lets you use the forums / wikis much more efficiently.

Yeah, doing a "save page as" and cutting-n-pasting was quickly getting out of hand. Searching and recalling it took a bit more than being a grep-guru. ;)

For those who may not know, you can install it from the Mozilla extension page:

http://www.mozilla.com/extensions/

or directly from the project page:

http://amb.vis.ne.jp/mozilla/scrapbook/

I know I sound like an advert, but the ability to just highlight-n-drag, make my own notes, put them into folders, search my notes, and most importantly, import and export them to/from usb keys or other filesystems is what blew me away.

Here's a quick screenshot of my notes:

thanks for reminding me about this, I used to use it when I was without a web connection sometimes, I got on a computer connected and saved alot of sites and then exported them and read them whenever.

I really didnt think about using it to save and organize all the helpfull tips you stumble across on here. Now maybe I can cut my number of subscriptions, I have alot from months back which are long dead but have helpful hints I might need, just a pain to find them lol

I use a personal wiki, PmWiki to be exact. PmWiki is available here: http://www.pmwiki.org/ . PmWiki is very easy to install and setup and doesn't require any database, it just needs a webserver and php. And, there are lots of skins for PmWiki. PmWiki uses wiki syntax and you can put almost anything in it, including external webpages. PmWiki even supports site/page security (password required to edit, upload, attach, etc).

Features - http://www.pmwiki.org/wiki/PmWiki/PmWikiFeatures
Installing - http://www.pmwiki.org/wiki/PmWiki/Installation
Skins - http://www.pmwiki.org/wiki/Cookbook/Skins

I have apache2 set up to listen only to 127.0.0.1:80 so it doesn't listen for any request coming from outside my box. PmWiki is where I store all my personal tutorials and info. See the screenshot below if interested.

I believe I have scrapbook installed, but I have never tried it yet..

Once you've installed it, just restart Firefox. Now it will show up under the TOOLS menu, or you can toggle it on or off with ALT-K.
