I went to kernel.org and download the latest Kernel.
Has anyone had success compiling it ..?
How do you go about doing it ..?
Where there challenges / problems..?

Well,

With Ubuntu it is now not required for you to compile the kernel yourself, it upgrades the kernel automatically as newer versions are available in Ubuntu

Current latest version is 2.6.28.14 Latest kernet available on kernel.org is 2.6.30.1, unles you require specific features from this kernel I don't see the point.

someone who manually downloaded new kernel reported problems with it so i think the best option is to let Update manager to update kernel when it's ready
