Hello community geeks,

I have Ubuntu 8.04 LTS.
I want to upgrade some software versions such as:
Open office Org 2.4 to 3.0
Firefox 3.0.11 to 3.5
VLC 0.86e to 1.0

when I check with update manager it never show these updates. I thought it should be available through automatic update. am I missing here something. Do I need to change anything in synaptic package manager etc? (

thank you

Generally speaking, package versions are only upgraded from one release to another. Ubuntu isn't a rolling distro, hasn't been from the beginning, therefore, you'll never get the above mentioned upgrades through Synaptic. That said, both Open Office and Firefox have easy to install binaries, as for VLC, you may need to compile it from source.

Office Org specifically suggest to remove the package & install it separately.
All three are installable separately but I wanted to know whether I can get upgrade directly through synaptic updates. I think answer is NO.

Thanks for the reply.

You can't update software to a newer version through synaptic, as the version that is including with the distribution, only gets bug fixes and security updates.

The proper way to get new versions, is to update to a new version of Ubuntu.
