Was wondering if there was any interest in a Gandhi Edition. Probably some wallpaper and turning Synaptic into Satyagraha package manager?

Sanscrit fonts, Peacemaker Software

Probably not. I've hardly, if ever, seen anybody on this forum representing Ghana.

EDIT: I was tired and misread the title! :lolflag:

Oops, missed the typo. Fell asleep at the keyboard last night and the coffee didn't help the dyxlexia. But you know what I mean. Gandhi, as in Mohandas K Gandhi (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mohandas_Karamchand_Gandhi)
Was thinking it would be a lot better than a Hindu version, although come to think of it, Kali Ubuntu would be interesting.
Specs - would be barefoot, sandals, homespun, and light. Must run on 64mb, and 300Mhz CPU with about 8mb HD. Goal - save the world, the usual kind of Nobel Prize stuff.

Yeah, this would basically be a branding of a localized linux distro. This would work. We have this in the Philippines called "Bayanihan Linux". "Bayanihan" is the local vernacular for "heroism, honor, truthfulness, cooperation, etc.", which is quite similar to your concept.

IMO 99% of ubuntu special editions are pointless, just a rebranded ubuntu with a few applications swapped and a different wallpaper.

IMO it doesn't matter if you find them pointless. You didn't have to put any work into making them.

They're useful to those who make them, and you aren't forced to use them or contribute to them.

For more details, read What’s the point of Ubuntu remixes? (http://www.psychocats.net/ubuntucat/whats-the-point-of-ubuntu-remixes/)

I don't think anyone should demand another person create a Gandhi remix, but if someone actually creates one, great. I won't be using it but at least one person will.

Gandism is not an religion like Christanity hinduism and islam....

its a way of thinking

not need special ubuntus for every religion and philosophy

The Philosophy of ubuntu and gandism is almost same.....so why need a special version.....

original Ubuntu stands for ghandism already.....

Gandi influenced heavily Mandela who is the man behind ubuntu philosophy

So who wants to start a competing Ubuntu British Imperialist Edition?

I was thinking there is quite a gap on the ground between what we want to achieve and what is possible. Most South Africans don't have access to their own computers. Use Internet Cafes etc. There is a lot of computer junk around, and most of it is really bad stuff. P1 P11s, 32mb-64mb Ram, 133mhz CPUs, 10Mb harddrives, you get the picture. So where is the Ubuntu that can resurrect some of this hardware and make a kids life possible?

Ubuntu - the poverty edition? I think Gandhi Edition sounds better? And yes Nelson Mandela was quite influenced by the man, come to think of it.

But if you make a Hindu edition Ubuntu, you'd have to release 20 different models, one for each class of people (cast system)... of course the lowest class would get a link with, "you are not allowed to use it" and "what are you even doing on the internet".

I see so what you are saying is that only Hinduism has the social structure system and that racism, apartheid, isolationist attitude based on skin color, stature, finance, education is non existent elsewhere. I guess you do live in a self induced delusion if you truly believe all that doesn't exist in world around you. Open your eyes and take a look around. Btw, in today's India, its actually advantageous to be from the so called lower caste as affirmative action puts you right at top over others.

Maybe a Bakti Vedanta version would also be cool? "Devotion to Linux"

BTW Gandhi was into non-violence, so no KDE or Reiserserfs allowed.

New parameters. Must fit on a 1.4 stiffy disk. Fully working computer, capable of handling monochrome which means no glitz and GTK.

Perhaps Openbox or LXDE and Qt?

The meaning of "terrorist" has been seriously diluted...

I guess I should point out real quickly that, if you are mips, that's against the forum rules so you should probably stop using that account. Don't mean to start a snowball, though. (You aren't mips, right?)

I did not know that; I will stop posting as Mips and only post as Snowpine from now on. ;)

Have you checked out Chakra linux? The Wheel is a symbol often associated with Gandhi-ji. Might be an interesting starting point for your project.

ps My sincere apologies for my earlier attempt at humor. :( I assumed this thread was lighthearted and humorous, because of your mis-spelling (and the timing with today's earlier Mandela thread)... if you want people to take your project seriously, I suggest you learn how to spell his name.

How about a Van Halen Edition?

When it starts up instead of the African drums it will play the intro drums to Hot For Teacher.

I see the subject line now has the correct spelling. Thank you.

Some great contributions from Snowpine!

A point of departure could be the Lubuntu LXDE project

https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Lubuntu (https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Lubuntu)

https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Specs/UbuntuLxdeDesktop

BTW I think adding letters instead of prefixes to Ubuntu i.e Kubuntu is ridiculous.

PPS I think there are quite a few people around you would like a Van Halen edition and who are uncomfortable with Ubuntu Satanic Edition, however this thread is for discussing Ubuntu and Gandhi-ji.:) so we would probably want something from Ravi Shankar or a Bangra Beat?

Hi PartisanEntity,

Sure,

i think some of us folks from India, were just wanting to get some facts right and it does seem one particular forum member (with multiple id's it seems) seem to have a propensity to slander some unquestonable heroes.

Let's discuss this in the spirit of Ubuntu, which is about sharing, and mutual cooperation for the benefit of all people. Gandhi compassion remix, I pray for your indulgence and clarity so that the LXDE project gets some of the support it deserves. Let's be the first LXDE distro that stays true to the twin cardinal principles of Gandhi's thought which are truth and nonviolence. It should be remembered that the English word "truth" is an imperfect translation of the Sanskrit, "satya", and "nonviolence", an even more imperfect translation of "ahimsa". Derived from "sat" - "that which exists" - "satya"contains a dimension of meaning not usually associated by English speakers with the word "truth". There are other variations, too, which we need not go into here, but surely, this is about Ubuntu remaining true to the meaning of the word, Ubuntu?

PS: does anyone know how to change the meta header to correct spelling?
