View Full Version : The Best MOVIE Plots.

Blacklightbulb
July 11th, 2009, 11:33 PM
This thread was inspired by no other thread.

What Movie PLOTS are Eligible:
1. Plots that can't be summarized in more than five sentences.
2. Plots containing either a great story line, twists and are rather complicated.

Classic example:

THE USUAL SUSPECTS (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0114814/)

Just to clarify I insisted on good plots because thats the only thing I care about in a movie.

So, let me get this straight. You admittedly "see too much movies" and you're hoping someone else comes here, to say a movie you haven't seen?

Good luck with that. Cheers mate!

When they invent a mind reading devise, maybe I'll be able to help. Until then, there's nothing I can do.

Well certainly I can't list all the movies I've seen. That's more than 700 I think.
Fight Club is one hell of a mindf(_)ck. One of my favorites actually.

Beyond Reasonable Doubt (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0080432/) - based on a true story. I first saw this in a lecture theatre in a University a few months after it was released, and the guy whose story inspired the book that this movie is based on made a guest appearance and said a few words.

2001: A Space Odyssey (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0062622/) The perfect sci-fi film, completely unmitigated by any cross-genre contamination (i.e. no action, no horror, no romance, no comedy). You don't watch 2001; you experience it.

Primer (2004) (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0390384/)[imdb.com].

A group of engineers devise a time machine by accident. It leads to rather insane levels of confusion as they wrestle with the problems of causality and such. The science in the film is mostly pretty believable, too. I'll be writing a proper review of this film soon. It is completely unlike any film involving time travel you have ever seen. You can watch it on the intertubes (http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=3909854615539675694) [video.google.com], too.

As a Portuguese speaker, I forgot to suggest... City of God (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0317248/), Elite Squad (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0861739/) and on a more alternative note Blindness (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0861689/). All of them great films and all of them great reflections. About Blindness, while watching it, keep in mind that it is a literary adaptation from a novel by José Saramago and that it has a very strong poetical vein. You'll notice some untied scenes on the film but in my opinion, they were deliberately introduced (since they don't affect the general plot). For the curiosity to rise and lead to the book. Other than that, you'll have to apologize me, but I don't have the patience to suggest a movie that you might or might have not seen.

The Insider (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Insider_%28film%29). They say truth is stranger than fiction; this movie is just about that. Watch this movie for Russel Crowe; awesome work!

If you are into non-Hollywood movies then you should give Johnny Gaddar (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Johnny_Gaddaar) a shot. This movie has lots of twists and thrills and director's tribute to James Hadley Chase's (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/James_Hadley_Chase) stories.

An absolute masterpiece. The iambic pentameter is really quite something. the script is almost Shakespearean in its beauty. I particular enjoy Ian McShane's monologues. Really awesome stuff.

Another great drama is The Wire (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Wire) [wikipedia.org]. Just get the boxset and immerse yourself in it. You will not be disappointed. It really is just the perfect drama.

The Sopranos is pretty good too. If you can stomach sitting through nine seasons or so, it's really worth it.

And Six Feet Under. This programme is just stunning stuff. By the time I got to the last few episodes, I felt kinda creepy: the characterisation is so good that I felt as if I was peering into the lives of others. And unlike the Sopranos, the last ever episode is brilliant.

For me the best movies are not always the movies with the best plot.
Take the first Star Wars film, compared to the others (and yes that includes the prequel trilogy even though episode I sucks big) it has a very paper thin plotline... but its how it was done is what matters here, A new hope took old dungeons and dragons style storytelling and flung it into a futuristic setting and made legends of its own.
In fact movies with too much plot can be bad too, look at the lord of the rings movies for example.
I might be lynched for this but honestly I disliked the Lord of the rings films, too long and sometimes too dull.
If I can film three movies that were five hours long with a majority of said film be people walking I would get booed out by many.
But because this is a "epic saga" LOTR gets away with murder.
But the LOTR movies suffer the same weaknesses the books have, having so much time getting to know every last detail of the story but at the same time making it overwhelming in terms of how many plots to take care of.
Now I am not knocking Tolkien, I love his works but sometimes yeh I felt he overdid it.
Its possible to develop a good long story with a beginning and an end without too much strain for the reader, instead of having just three large books in LOTR maybe 5 smaller books would be more appreciated in a time where attention spans are small.
Now lucky for me I have great attention spans when getting into a sotry but even for me LOTR can be a tough read.

The LOTR movies are just a study in that normal books are hard to move to the theater. A book you normally spend several hours reading; when you have to compress that to a couple of hours you have to make sacrifices.

So no a long plot doesn't necessarily make a good movie, but a good plot still often makes a good movie.

The Lives of Others (German)

Thank you. I haven't watched this one but I certainly will.

There are other great German productions. Not only on movies but on television. There's a great show called "The Criminalist" (that I think it's still airing) with Christian Berkel... damn. The few episodes I watched (admittedly somewhere in first couple of seasons), they had a great directing job and impressive acting.

When I was little I used to like watch Cobra 11. If I see that now I'm sure to get bored in less than 5 minutes.

My girl (Thai)

realname - แฟนฉัน ( Fan Chan )

My Girl is a romantic comedy film offering a nostalgic look back at the childhood friendship of a boy and girl growing up in a small town in Thailand in the 1980s. It was the debut film by six young screenwriter-directors

My Girl is a story about two children Jean and Noi-Na .Jeab was an effeminate child who always played with Noi-Na when they were small because their houses were close together and there weren’t many other kids around. Adolescence changed Jeab’s immediate social group and he started hanging around with other boys, and even agreed to torment the other girls -- including Noi-Na -- at his friends’ behest. Noi-Na was understandably upset and angry and her family moved to another province a week later. Jeab didn’t see her after that, but then one day he received an invitation to Noi-Na’s wedding. He wants to attend this wedding but his irresponsible actions done earlier would prevent him from attending the wedding.

The original Planet of the Apes (just the first movie, none of the other ones).

the third one (escape from planet of the apes) the one where the apes come to present day (the 1970s) earth is pretty good.

invasion of the body snatchers (the original)

300, no plot but very good visuals

the lady vanishes (or any early hitchcocks)

little miss sunshine, saw it recently, its actually pretty good

one flew over the cuckoos nest

the shawshank redemption

dollars trilogy, not much plot but good films.

+1's for trainspotting and pulp fiction.

Stolen kisses (French)

Original name- Baisers volés

Francois Truffaut is one of the most influential, critically acclaimed, cinematically radical and commercially successful filmmakers in the history of cinema. One of the most talked about directors around the world, he pioneered the French New Wave cinema, created some of the most loved masterpieces of 20th century and to put it mildly- changed the way cinema was made/ watched/ written about

Trade (the movie 2007) was in my opinion a bit unrealistic, the police with blazing sirens and the converted human trafficker (by the girl) was a rather fantasy Hollywood ending.

There's this film a supposedly psychological horror or something.
May 2002 (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0303361/)

It isn't really a horror. There are various occasions when you'd burst out laughing with the queerness of the moment. My favorite is when shes washing the things after she has done the deeds. :lolflag:

Reminds me of the newest friday the 13th. There are no truly scary moments in the whole movie, but there are parts that where supposed to be scary that make you burst out laughing. My favorite is when the one blonde girl is hiding under a dock and Jason stabs her in the top of the head with his machete and lifts her just enough to expose her chest. My friend and I laughed for like 5 minutes xD.

Lol you got me curious. i find the exact frame you describes. He eyes are rolling lol.
Also the film is looses all it credibility with all that nudity (not that there's much..but). You either get scared or you get excited ..... or whatever you do...........:D

I watched Kidulthood (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0435680/) today. It basically focuses on the negative side of the teen population in UK. Those that Travis Bickle (http://www.imdb.com/character/ch0003677/) (Taxi Driver 1976) would presumably call the city smuck. Anyways it was quite entertaining.
