I found this very queer when a mail that i received was from someone who had an id "name@googlemail.com".
Never heard of that before. I thought it was always referred to as gmail.com.
I go to googlemail.com and am redirected to the gmail site. Now, how does the different url crop up. Does anyone have an idea.

It's a British thing, basically someone else had the gmail name so they had to use a different name in the UK, as I recall.

In the United Kingdom (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_Kingdom) and Germany (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Germany) it is officially called Google Mail.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gmail

Thankfully us Brits who got in early could get gmail.com.
Interesting (or not) note, he can still give his name as ID@gmail.com and you can send mail there, it will work just the same as ID@googlemail.com. I assume rest of the world could also do the reverse.
