View Full Version : Ubisurfer Linux Netbook?

July 10th, 2009, 03:31 PM
Hi, I got some junk mail today fromn Maplin and it had a picture of a netbook called the 'Ubisurfer'. The specs weren't great but I was surprised to see that this was being sold with a distro that looked alot like Puppy. Maybe it was just the same window manger. Does anyone know anything about this?

I'm not interested in the hardware as I already have a netbook, but I'd like to know what distro they are using.

The best I could find:

It comes in a choice of polished black or rubberised black finishes, and runs a custom-built version of the Linux operating system.

I'm really interested in getting one of these. I travel around the UK frequently and i've been lugging my laptop around with me for the past 6 months just so I can check my emails and stay in contact with family and friends. I have been told many times to get a phone which does emails but i'm not interested in those blackberry's or the iphone, i want my phone to be just a phone!

Does anyone know if it can do instant messaging?

I found this site which has some pics of it and some info....looks pretty cool to me.

I wouldn't go near that thing.

I ordered one, but didn't find any reviews (other than re-writings of the spec sheet).
Even for use around the house I think I'll find it useful, and for me the data package is as good as occasional (weekends away) web on my phone. Happy to answer any easy questions once it turns up!

I've been waiting for this Ubisurfer to be released for months so when I got the in-stock notification from Maplin I ordered and now I have one.

It's linux based with a number of installed applications. Firefox for wifi connection browsing and their own (decompressing) browser for GPRS connection.

I'm really pleased to see python 2.5 there too

Nice little machine, quite slow but small, good screen, decent keys. I'm happy so far.
