my printer is a new ip1980 canon printer. the OS is not detecting this ..

Bad news, I'm afraid.
"Paperweight" is their term for printers not able to work in Linux. Unfortunately, Canon is one of two manufacturers (Lexmark is the other) that are notoriously bad for providing drivers or support for Linux.
There is a link on that page to a forum for Canon printers which may or may not help.
Bookmark the OpenPrinting page. If you ever decide to get a new printer, check out the model before you buy. Even HP (the most Linux-friendly maker) produces a few models for which there are no Linux drivers.
