How do you make an SD card bootable in Ubuntu?

Followed the above guide and am erroring out here:
echo -n BOOTDISK | dd bs=1 count=8 seek=64 of=/dev/sdx1I should mention that I am making it bootable so I can install Windows XP on my laptop.
Any help is appreciated. Thanks :)
