I just noticed this on the Google Chrome thread:

Linked from New York Times article:

I thought the 1% barrier had only just been broken, also I thought Mac was between 5-10%. Statistics are funny.

It's just about impossible to get accurate statistics.

I think I'll create my own statistics by polling friends and family. It would come out as Linux 80%, XP 10%, Win2000 10%, OSX 0%.

WOOHOO! I'm living the dream! :guitar:

Looks like Microsoft's "I'm a PC" ads have been successful after all.

</sarcasm>

I really don't give a d@mn about statistics, myself.

wow...
after more than 15years of development, linux gained 2%.
I think this year will be a "Year Of Linux on Desktop"

Just a few weeks ago Linux lost 39% of its user base. Man I can't take this roller coaster market share ride anymore.

I'll say this yet again, Linux market share statistics are absolutely useless because there's no way to accurately measure them. I stopped paying attention to these stats a long time ago.

All I know is that millions of people are using Linux and that is comforting enough, not that I wanted to be... comforted.

linux users cannot be counted because unlike ms or apple their are no liscence sales to count.

How the hell is Mac OS X only 3%?

You'd be amazed how few Mac computers are sold outside the US. Outside of the academic environment (where linux is similarly popular) and maybe the artists, it's very hard to find one. Apple laptops since the Intel transition are more successful, though.

I know more people using Linux than Macs. Hey, I only know two guys owning a Mac! Maybe because this is the third world...

Anyone with even a basic knowledge of statistics can take any figure and make it agree with anything he wants to say, and be very convincing to those without knowledge of statistics. And that is once you get the numbers...

You could also go the Howard Stern route, before you even get the numbers:

If you want bigger 'numbers,' measure from a different place ;)

IMHO w3 counter gives a pretty healthy statistic for desktop operating systems, considering it gets its data from browser user agents.
