Error on startup:
'The panel encountered a problem while loading
"OAFIID: GNOME_Panel_WirelessApplet".
Do you want to delete...' (I haven't)

Wired connection works, wireless does not (even if wired disconnected)
NetworkManager has everything disabled but VPN Connections

Recently installed Ubuntu 9.04 (Jaunty Jackalope)
on an old laptop after Windows flamed out (reformatted drive)

Terminal shows presence of (internal) card Broadcom BCM4306 802.11b/g Wireless LAN controller, with 'driver=b43-pci-bridge'

Wireless router functioning properly via alternate (Windows) machine (WEP security).
