I recently upgraded from Kubuntu Hardy to Jaunty but was so disappointed with KDE 4 that I've switched to Sidux which still used KDE 3 in the 2009-01 release. It's hard to describe why, but I've always preferred KDE 3 to the simplicity of Gnome. When I use Dolphin and amaroK 2 I feel that desktop environment developers have abandoned creating a powerful GUI or trying to bridge the gap with the CLI. Even Konqueror seems to have been reduced in functionality. Expert users are apt (excuse the pun) to respond to queries with "use the CLI" but Windows users hardly ever do this. KDE 3 seemed to heading in the right direction of an advanced GUI a sort-of "desktop for intelligent people" if you like. but I don't care about 3D compositing or plasmoids so KDE 4 doesn't really interest me. When distros no longer use KDE 3 I will probably switch to fluxbox or icewm.

In the case of KDE4 I will agree it is a shame so many rushed into using it.
The promise of flashy interfaces I fear is what overruled common sense.
But then again KDE 4.3 is shaping up nicely, its almost on the level of KDE 3
