What a way to start the day!

My wife was up and heard a noise. When she investigated she found a large cat finishing off a deer faun in the back yard of our neighbors! It ran off but while my wife was trying to get the neighbor's attention the cat came back and took the faun away.

The neighbor, a farmer, after hearing the description said it sounds like a cougar. They tracked it to the top of the hill, but lost the trail after that.

Now, we have see bobcats and I don't know how many of you have heard the "rumors" of a Mountain Lion around Litchfield hills (I say "rumor" becasue the State of CT refuses to acknowledge there are any in the state) but this sounds to be a young Cougar/Mountain Lion which according to Wikipedia, leaves their mothers around late spring and summer.

This also helps explain why the Coyote activity in the neighborhood has disappeared.

Has anybody else seen or heard of any big cat activity?

For what it's worth, we are about 6 miles (driving) southwest from the center of Waterbury (fewer miles as the crow flies). It is conceivable that a young one, in trying to find new territory, could have traveled from Litchfield area to ours considering how large of an area they roam normally.

Scary.

Yup. I saw a mountain lion in White's Woods last spring. I've been keeping my eyes peeled (I'm there quite a bit), but I haven't seen it since. I live in the Historic District.
