Hi all, ):P

I have a HP Pavilion 520c at my home and it used to run Windows XP until it had a problem and every time I turned it on it would show a BSOD. I want to put Ubuntu on it now, but when I boot from the CD. I get a bunch of SQUASHFS errors and then it takes me to a console. Anyone have advice on what I should do?

Thanks,

there may have been an error when writing to the CD.

have you tried burning a second cd to see if that is the case?

-only burn on a CD-R. not a CD-RW or DVD.
-burn at the slowest speed possible. minor errors are fine on a music CD, as you will never notice them. this is not the case when burning an operating system to CD. 2x or 4x would be best.
-it cant hurt to test the CD for errors, just in case. https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Installation/CDIntegrityCheck

It should be the problem of either your installation medium (CD-R) or your Optical Drive

The CD works fine, I burned it and used it successfully about a week or two ago. I would also prefer to have a solution that does not involve rebuilding or purchasing a new computer.

CD's get damaged a lot easier than people often suspect -- again, we would normally not notice this damage in a music CD or even a normal data CD.

however, if you dont want to install from CD you could always go with a bootable USB disk:
